Latest research indicates that suicide is listed within the top 5 most disturbing issues experienced by the teens of today. With suicide rates alarmingly increasing across Australia, extensive research has been conducted to discover what’s troubling today’s youth, in which the results concluded the top five most popular issues experienced that lead to depression in adolescents: mental health, family relationships, emotional well -being, dating and partner relationships and finally suicide related. Researchers believe that in identifying the cause of the suicide they can enforce preventative procedures that will ultimately decrease the rate of suicide within Australia.
One particular research team has concluded that one of the major causes for depression that leads to suicide is the unnerving rate of un-employability amongst young people. Recommendations to counteract this issue focussed on increasing the employability of young people that are faced with disadvantages to assist them in seeking employment through identifying the challenges and hurdles experienced by long-term unemployed youth, highly-disadvantaged job seekers and young people living in social housing communities.
In 2015 research was released that was intended to encourage discussion on child and youth suicide. In spite of the alarming results which concluded that suicide accounts for 19.3% of all deaths of Australian children within the age range of 5-17 there is currently insufficient acknowledgment of this exclusive mental health challenge that is affecting young people today. Discussion has opposed ideas that carelessly assume that the leading reasons of suicide within young people are like that of adults. In order for us to develop effective responses, services & programs “we must recognize and understand the views of young people today, which simply fluctuate from those of mature aged individuals” explain researchers. The youth of today observe and view the world and their circumstances in a different manner to adults, such that they may sometimes have a negative attitude towards their surroundings which may result and stem from the slightest bit of adversity that they may have experienced. This negative attitude may force them to lose rationality and convince them to conduct drastic measures of which suicide is a result. Professionals encourage society to recognise and understand these behavioural tactics that ultimately enforce the concept of suicide upon a challenged individual; “we must acknowledge and target the cause in order to eliminate the effect” is the idea that is trying to be projected.
Ultimately, professionals believe that to cure the wide spread disease of suicide in the young people of today, it is imperative that we understand the reason or cause of the suicide in cases that have already occurred, such that we may learn from these understandings and attempt prevention methods targeted to these popular issues. For example, if a supposed epidemiology result indicated that suicide or suicidal thoughts in school children was caused from a large amount of social inequality and bullying then action should be taken specifically against social inequality and bullying amongst schoolchildren. In doing this, it is believed that a more long term solution for suicide can be discovered, solutions that target specific age groups and individuals so that we progressively attempt at permanently eliminating suicide from our society.
