Workplace redundancies contribute to suicide:
Redundancies in the mining industry and now Masters closing its doors – these are concerning events. The World Health Organisation estimates that in a company of 1,000 employees, one worker will die by suicide every ten years. For every employee who dies by suicide, another 10–20 will make a suicide attempt. In addition, between 200–300 workers will suffer from a serious mental health problem.
These facts combined with the knowledge that loss can play a significant role in a person viewing suicide as the only answer to their situation alerts us that where redundancies are about to occur there is an increased need for suicide first aid, where co-workers can be educated on recognising a fellow worker who could be at risk, and how to keep them safer until appropriate professional can be engaged.
