Who can help with suicide prevention

Is it true?…only a mental health professional can help someone who is thinking about suicide?

The stats tell us that it is usually the non professional who encounters someone who is thinking suicide before they engage with a professional, such as a counsellor, psychologist, or mental health worker. This also tells us that if more people in our community were willing to do a suicide first aid course, more lives would be saved.

A suicide first aider is a first responder who has been skilled to recognise when someone is at risk and how to keep them safe until appropriate professional help can be sourced. The most recognised suicide first aid course is Livingworks ASIST – which stands for ‘applied suicide intervention skills training’. If you attended this 2 day course, you could make a big difference in helping create a suicide safer community.
